About San Juan Bautista & Geographical

San Juan Bautista, Ca is right off of highway 156. The town was incorporated in 1869. Before 1905 is was known only as “San Juan”, during the year of 1905 that is when they added “Bautista”. The town sits right between the Gabilan Mountains and Flint Hills. The population in San Juan Bautista was of 2,682 in 2013-2014. If you ever go to San Juan Bautista, it is a town stuck in the past. People have fought hard to keep it like this. There are mom and pop shops but nothing big, besides the Windmill Market which is a grocery store. San Juan Bautista is also known for the mission and the buildings around the mission that play a role in the town’s history. All of these are open to the public for a small donation.

The Settlers began building the San Juan Mission in 1795. During the time of building the mission, the settlers started changing everything. In what today is Third St and Mariposa (in the corner where the bank use to be) Father Antonio saw how there was a tribe . After him and all the settlers came to start building the mission, they destroyed all the Mutsuns communities. The families were broken up and taken as slaves to work in building the mission. Also many of the European diseases killed off many of the Natives. This made it difficult since the natives where the ones that worked on building the mission. 70% of the Native population had dies of diseases that were brought by the Europeans.

By the mid 1840’s San Juan Bautista had a population of approximately 150, half were white and half were Indian. During the 1800’s there were businesses being built on Third St. They started expanding with building general merchandise stores, saloons and a hotel. During the 1900’s there was a limestone quarry, which ended soon after due to the limestone being completely gone. One of the most important natural advantages San Juan Bautista has is the agricultural land surrounding the small town. This has been and continues to be an important factor for the economy.

As we can see today, many of the buildings in this town are kept the same. It is very hard to do any change to the buildings. The committee of San Juan Bautista have made it hard for big chain stores and restaurants to open in their town, they want to continue with the small townfeeling and small mom and pop stores.

Geographical

San Juan Bautista sits adjacent to the San Andreas Fault. There have actually been a few quakes that have been significantly larger than usual. on November 20, 2014 we had two quakes that made things at home shake. There was the 4.2, and about five minutes after there was an aftershock of a 3.6 magnitude earthquake, because we are so close to the fault the quakes feel stronger than our surrounding areas.
